Best Heated Airers UK 2026: 5 Picks for Indoor Laundry

UK Indoor Laundry Buying Guide

A heated airer can speed up indoor drying without using the 2–3kW power draw of a conventional tumble dryer, but low hourly wattage does not automatically mean the lowest cost per full load. Capacity, drying time, room temperature and moisture control all matter.

Quick answer: the Dry:Soon Mini 3-Tier is our best all-round pick for smaller UK homes because it combines a compact footprint, 15kg stated load capacity and a relatively low 198W power rating. For value, the Minky Wing 12m includes a cover at a much lower purchase price. For large family loads, the Minky sureDRI 4-Tier gives 23m of drying space, a cover and built-in timer.

How we chose these heated airers

AurumPick has not physically laboratory-tested these products. We compared current manufacturer and major-retailer specifications, including drying space, stated load capacity, power, storage size, included cover, timer features and warranty. We also used current independent testing methodology from Which? as a benchmark for the factors that matter most: drying speed, energy use, stability, capacity and ease of use.

Which? has tested more than 25 heated airers and drying systems, but its detailed product scores are subscriber-only. We do not reproduce, infer or present those hidden scores as AurumPick rankings.

Before buying a heated airer, read How to Dry Clothes Indoors Without Damp or Mould UK. Heat makes water leave the fabric faster, but that water still enters the room air unless it is removed through ventilation, extraction or a dehumidifier.

1. Dry:Soon Mini 3-Tier Heated Airer — best overall

Best for: flats, one- or two-person households and rooms where floor space matters.

The Dry:Soon Mini uses 198W and folds to about 8cm deep for storage. Lakeland states a 15kg maximum load and dimensions of 60 x 63 x 113.5cm, while the technical manual confirms the 198W power rating. Its lower wattage is attractive for long drying sessions, and Lakeland provides a three-year guarantee.

  • 198W power rating.
  • 15kg stated maximum load.
  • Compact 60 x 63cm footprint.
  • Folds to around 8cm deep.
  • Three-year Lakeland guarantee.

Trade-off: the cover is sold separately and there is no built-in timer on the standard Mini. The compact footprint also means less rail space than a full-size tower.

AurumPick verdict: our best balance of footprint, capacity and power draw for a typical smaller UK home.

Check current Lakeland specifications and price.

2. Minky Wing 12m Heated Clothes Airer with Cover — best value

Best for: buyers who want a cover included without paying premium tower-airer prices.

Argos lists 12m of drying space, a 16kg capacity and a 230W supplier-confirmed power rating. The included cover is designed to retain warmth around the laundry, and the winged frame folds flat for storage.

  • 230W power rating.
  • 12m drying space.
  • 16kg stated capacity.
  • Cover included.
  • Winged design folds flat.

Trade-off: there is no built-in timer, and the wide open footprint needs more floor width than a narrow tower.

AurumPick verdict: the strongest value proposition here when purchase price and an included cover matter more than maximum rail length.

Check current Argos specifications and price.

3. Minky sureDRI 4-Tier Heated Airer — best for family loads

Best for: larger households, bedding and high-volume indoor laundry.

The Minky sureDRI 4-Tier provides 23m of drying space with a 20kg maximum load, a 300W power rating, included cover and built-in timer. Its multi-position arms can be arranged for different garment lengths and fold flatter against a wall between uses.

  • 23m drying space.
  • 20kg stated maximum load.
  • 300W power rating.
  • Cover included.
  • Built-in timer.

Trade-off: it is one of the most expensive models in this shortlist and takes up more room when fully loaded.

AurumPick verdict: the best fit here for a larger household that will actually use the extra drying space and timer.

Check current Minky range and price.

4. Dry:Soon 3-Tier Heated Airer — best premium 3-tier

Best for: households that want the familiar 21m tower format with a long retailer guarantee.

Lakeland states 21m of drying space, a 15kg load limit and capacity for roughly two average wash loads. The manufacturer manual confirms a 300W power rating. It folds to around 8cm deep and carries Lakeland’s three-year guarantee.

  • 21m drying space.
  • 15kg maximum load.
  • 300W power rating.
  • Folds to around 8cm deep.
  • Three-year Lakeland guarantee.

Trade-off: the standard model is expensive and its purpose-made cover is an optional extra rather than included.

AurumPick verdict: a premium, well-established 3-tier design for buyers willing to pay more for the Lakeland ecosystem and guarantee.

Check current Lakeland specifications and price.

5. Argos Home 21m 3-Tier Heated Airer — best lower-cost tower with timer

Best for: buyers who want full-size 3-tier capacity and a digital timer at a lower purchase price.

Argos currently lists 21m of drying space, a 15kg capacity, 300W maximum power and a digital timer. The aluminium frame folds down to roughly 8cm deep for storage.

  • 21m drying space.
  • 15kg stated capacity.
  • 300W power rating.
  • Digital timer.
  • Compact folded depth.

Trade-off: the standard listing is airer-only, so a cover is a separate purchase. The manufacturer’s guarantee is shorter than Lakeland’s.

AurumPick verdict: the best lower-cost route here to a full-size 21m tower if a built-in timer is useful to you.

How much do heated airers cost to run?

At 26.32p/kWh, the simple continuous-power calculation is about 5.2p/hour for 198W, 6.1p/hour for 230W and 7.9p/hour for 300W. A six-hour session at those power ratings is roughly 31p, 36p and 47p respectively.

Hourly cost is not the same as cost per load. A low-wattage airer can run for many hours. Which? testing shows that drying speed and capacity can change the total cost materially, and for large household loads a modern heat-pump tumble dryer may be as cheap or cheaper overall.

How to choose the right heated airer

Choose by usable drying space, not only weight capacity

A high kilogram rating is useful, but rail length determines whether shirts, towels and bedding can be spaced properly. Overcrowding slows airflow and can leave the parts away from heated bars damp.

Decide whether a cover matters

A purpose-made cover traps more warmth around the laundry and can improve drying performance. Use only a cover designed or approved for that airer, and follow the manufacturer’s ventilation instructions.

Think about storage before buying

Tower airers save floor width while open, whereas winged airers are lower and wider. If the airer will live in a bedroom or small flat, folded depth and footprint may matter more than maximum capacity.

A timer is useful but not universal

Some models have built-in timers. Do not add an external timer or smart plug unless the manufacturer permits it; for example, the Dry:Soon standard manual specifically says not to connect that model to an external timer or remote-control system.

Do heated airers make condensation worse?

They can contribute if the moisture released from clothing has nowhere to go. A heated rail speeds evaporation; it does not remove water from the room air.

  • Dry laundry in one suitable room rather than across the whole home.
  • Keep designed ventilation such as trickle vents working.
  • Use extraction or controlled window ventilation where appropriate.
  • Consider a dehumidifier if indoor drying is frequent or condensation is persistent.

Use How to Dry Clothes Indoors Without Damp or Mould UK for the full room setup, and see Best Dehumidifiers UK if moisture removal is the main problem.

Heated airer safety

  • Use the airer indoors on a dry, stable and heat-resistant surface.
  • Do not exceed the stated load limit.
  • Keep it clear of curtains, furniture and other combustible items.
  • Use only compatible covers and accessories.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s plug, extension-lead and timer instructions.
  • Switch off and unplug after use as instructed by the manufacturer.

Avoid leaving a heated airer running while you sleep or completely unattended. Which? notes that most brands advise against this and that risk rises when airers are overloaded, too close to furnishings or used with unsuitable extension leads.

FAQs

Are heated airers cheap to run?

Their hourly power draw is usually modest: the models in this guide range from 198W to 300W, or roughly 5–8p per hour at 26.32p/kWh. Total drying cost depends on how many hours and sessions are needed.

Is a heated airer cheaper than a tumble dryer?

Not always per full load. Heated airers draw less power per hour but can run much longer. For small loads they can be economical; for large regular loads, an efficient heat-pump tumble dryer can be competitive.

Should I buy a heated airer with a cover?

A purpose-made cover can retain warmth around the laundry and improve drying, but only use a cover intended for that model and keep any designed ventilation panels unobstructed.

Can I leave a heated airer on overnight?

It is safer to avoid leaving one running while you sleep or completely unattended. Follow the exact manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

Will a heated airer stop condensation?

No. It speeds up evaporation from wet fabric but does not remove moisture from the room. Ventilation or a dehumidifier may still be needed.

What wattage is a heated airer?

Many rail-style models are around 200–330W. Fan-powered drying pods can be much higher, often around 850–1200W, so they should be compared separately.
